QUINCY, ILL. -- Quincy firefighters say the number of house fires is lower than usual this holiday season.

Firefighter Jerry Mast said this can be credited to the "Keep the Wreath Red" program. Each fire station around Quincy hung a wreath outside with 25 red light bulbs on it.

The fire department swaps a red light bulb for a white one each time there is a house fire. So far this year, they have only had two. Last year, the Quincy Fire Department responded to eight house fires during the holiday season.

As a preventative measure, Mast recommends that people take down their Christmas tree, because it becomes a bigger fire hazard as it dries up.

The program ends January 3rd.
