The man charged with gunning down a Quincy man last week made his first court appearance Monday.

Vincent B. Carter stood before Adams County Judge Robert Adrian and disputed the first-degree murder charge that says he shot and killed 53-year-old Terry Williams.

Adrian explained that Monday's hearing was just a reading of the formal charges and not to determine Carter's guilt or innocence.

Carter, 44, is represented by Public Defender Holly Henze.

State's Attorney Jon Barnard detailed Carter's criminal history which includes drug and traffic convictions in Houston, Texas and Cook and DuPage counties in Illinois.

U.S. Marshals arrested Carter about 10:50 a.m. Friday at a home on Quincy's North side.

The shooting took place shortly after 3 p.m. Thursday at 219 S. 11th St. Carter is accused of shooting Williams with a semi-automatic pistol. Williams was pronounced dead at Blessing Hospital a short time later.

Carter remains in jail on a $1 million bond. He faces between 45 and 85 years in state prison if convicted. That sentence includes a 25-year enhancement because a firearm was used in the shooting.

Carter's preliminary hearing is scheduled for Jan. 23 before Adams County Circuit Judge Scott Walden.
