HANNIBAL, MO. -- Crowds of people made their way to downtown Hannibal Saturday evening to decorate lanterns.

The James O'Donnell Funeral Home sponsored their fourth annual Memorial Lantern Float service.

Over 250 people registered for the riverfront service.

Families decorated lanterns to honor lost loved ones.

The paper lanterns were then lit and floated down river.

"It's important to me because its something special that having lost my own father I know that holidays or really anytime is a tough time," Jim O'Donnell, from  James O'Donnell Funeral Home said. "And it's just something different to give people an opportunity to be creative and decorate a lantern and do something individual to remember their mom or dad or who ever is just a nice opportunity and a special way they can remember."

Rising paper lanterns were also lit and released into the sky at dusk.
