FLORENCE, ILL. -- The Illinois Department of Transportation says steel fabrication work has started on parts that will be used to repair a bridge that spans the Illinois River between Scott and Pike counties.

Midwest Foundation Corporation of Tremont, Illinois won the competitive bidding process for the fabrication work. IDOT estimates work using the fabricated parts could begin as early as the first of 2013.

The bridge was closed earlier this summer after inspectors from the Illinois Department of Transportation found some problems with the lift span superstructure.

IDOT says two other contracts were awarded for materials earlier this year.

One contract is for the wire ropes that will replace 40-year-old existing wires. The second contract will be for recondition wheels and axles. New bearings will also be fabricated.

Repair of the bridge is expected to be completed by early spring 2013.
