Decision is a result of economic downturn

Keokuk, IA-- We have new information on the layoffs at the Keokuk Steel Castings Plant.

We found out from the Director of Human Resources at the plant that 32 employees will be laid off on April 1.  The company says the layoffs are a result of less demand in the marketplace.

We spoke with Iowa State Representative Jerry Kearns, who's also associated with the United Steelworkers Union about the recent layoffs.

"That's only about 10% of the workforce. So, it's not a great impact, but anytime you have a loss of good paying jobs that have good benefits, it will impact us some," Kearns said.

The plant says it has every intent to call those 32 employees as soon as the economy makes a turnaround.
