28 teaching positions eliminated

QUINCY, IL -- The Quincy School Board has voted to cut 28 teaching positions and freeze 22 administrators' salaries for the next school year.

School board members met for two hours tonight to discuss ways to reduce the district's budget by $2 million.

Most of that meeting was spent in closed session.

The board met at the Quincy School Board conference room, which turned out to be standing room only.

The Quincy School Board voted to eliminate teachers who fall into the following categories -- non-final year probationary teachers; non-final year probationary teachers for economic reasons; and final year probationary teachers. Eight educators will resign at the end of the 2008-2009 school year, and the school board has decided not to fill those positions. The cuts combined with the vacancies that will not be filled means 28 teaching positions will be eliminated. That's 5.6 percent of the Quincy Public School's teachers.

Are students going to suffer because of the cuts in teachers?

Superintendent Lonny Lemon says, "I'm hoping to say no. Our staff has always been so good. This has happened many times during the last 30 years of Quincy Public Schools, and our staff is great. I know they'll come to work just as hard, and it's our hope they'll find their way."

Board President Tom Dickerson said the board felt the reductions should be shared by administrators.

Dickerson says, "As difficult as that is and as hard as they work, it wasn't really about that. It's about sharing the burden that our whole district is facing during hard economic times. We don't take joy in what we've had to do."

Lemon says the board plans to hold another special meeting on April 20th to decide which "classified" or "non-teaching" employees will lose their jobs. He said the board had to act today on teaching cuts in order to comply with Illinois state codes.
