Frontier Settlement Day

Quincy, Ill.-- Families in Quincy were able to see what times were like in the 1800's.

The Friends of the Log Cabins Association, the Quincy Park District, along with the Lincoln Bicentennial Commission hosted the Lincoln-era, Frontier Settlement Day.

The event encourages people to visit the Lincoln-era log cabin village on Quinsippi island.  Within the first hour of the event, more than 140 people showed up. People learned about religious life in the 1800's.

There was a demonstration of rail splitting to show how fences were made.  There were also activities such as brick making and rope making to engage the young and the old.

We spoke to families who told us the event was very educational for their children, especially during summer vacation.

"I thought it would be good family day to spend with my sister and grandson and I figured for my grandson it would be a good learning experience," said Betty Hayden.

Alexis: Tell me something you learned today. "I learned how to make rope," said 9-year-old Harley Griffin.

Alexis: What's so cool about making rope? "It's fun cuz you get to play with your rope," he said.

"I made rope, because you get to turn them," said 8-year-old Caleb Griffin.

The Friends of the Log Cabins Association has been working to restore the village so it can be used for special events.

The log church is available for weddings.  You can contact the Quincy Park District to book events.
