HANNIBAL, MO. -- Dozens gathered in Hannibal Saturday afternoon in celebration of a historical remodeling project getting underway.
The Mark Twain Home Foundation will announced the details of a multi-partner collaboration to restore an endangered historic property on at 322 North Street.
The property, known as the 1844 Van Swearingen House, has been donated to the Foundation. Unoccupied for several years, the house is sound, but in need of immediate attention to be preserved.
Many organizations including high school students from Hannibal will take part in the construction.
"Kids graduate from this program. And they are certified as being historic preservation trades people. They get their High School diploma. This takes kids that often times won't ever leave our community. They stay but are underemployed or don't have things to do. We're teaching them a trade," said Bob Yepof Preservation Resources, Inc.
Renovations on the home are expected to take months to finish.
