Issue will get final consideration at March 1st meeting
The debate over whether to turn the managing authority of the Hannibal Convention and Visitors Bureau over the city manager continued at Tuesday nights Hannibal city council meeting.
HANNIBAL, MO. --
A first reading vote of 5-2 was in favor of the plan.
Mayor Roy Hark expressed concern about putting more work on the shoulders of city manager Jeff LaGarce.
Linda Coleberd and Steve Ayers with the Convention and Visitors Bureau spoke to council members at the meeting.
Coleberd stated the the Convention and Visitors Bureau should be viewed as a state or regional entity and not just another city department.
Steve Ayers reminded the council that 30 years ago when the voters approved a tax to support the agency it was with the understanding that it would be overseen by an independent board.
Both Ayers and Coleberd were concerned about the loss of funding oversight as well.
Because the HCVB was not created created through the city charter there is no need for the people to vote on the changeover of authority.
The matter will come up for final consideration at the Council's March 1st meeting.
