Bicycle struck on Hwy. 61 results in fatality

DES MOINES, IOWA -- A car collided with a bicycle in the 3100 block of Hwy. 61 in Iowa Thursday night just before 6 p.m.

The Des Moines County Sheriff's Office and the Iowa State Patrol responded to the accident.

58-year-old David Garrels, of Wever, was pronounced dead at the scene.

It was determined that Garrels was riding his bike southbound on Hwy. 61 south of Rock Spring Road, and was struck from behind by a car also traveling southbound.

The accident is still under investigation.
