HANNIBAL, MO. -- Hannibal police removed 16 cats from a home in the 700 block of Center this week.

There is a city ordinance that limits the number to five dogs or cats a household can have.

Animal control officers have set traps to catch other cats roaming around in the neighborhood.

More than 1500 new cases of animal hoarding are discovered each year across the United States according to AnimalHoarding.com.

What should you be on the lookout for?

Here are some things that the ASPCA says are signs that may indicate someone is an animal hoarder:

- They have numerous animals and may not know the total number of animals in their care
- Their home is deteriorated (i.e., dirty windows, broken furniture, holes in wall and floor, extreme clutter)
- Animals are emaciated, lethargic and not well socialized
- Fleas and vermin are present
- They are isolated from the community and appear to neglect themselves
