A hairstylist's first solo property "flip"

QUINCY, ILL. -- Television shows have popularized the idea of "do it yourself" home repairs and real estate investment.

Now the national trend of property "flipping" has made it's way to Quincy.

"We bought the house on Thursday and started that day.Our goal with this house is to find some of the character it once had and bring in some modern influence to it and some womanly touches," Lynn Sharrow said.

This cosmetology school instructor and hairstylist hopes to make a profit on her first solo property flip in just 12 weeks, all while doing the work herself.

"It's kind of the same business really, making something look better," Sharrow said.

With help from her father and advice from her contractor husband, she hopes to modernize the house while paying respect to the period it was built. She hopes to save money on the remodeling process by refurbishing existing features.

Sharrow explains some of her creative ideas, "The focal point is the stairway so I definitely want to make that pop and add a nice maybe reclaimed handrail to match the year of the house."

Other planned repairs include refinishing existing hardwood floors, modernizing the kitchen and a possible exposed brick wall. Sharrow has high hopes for the future of her investment.

"I think it would be a good starter house, you know, something they could have for a few years with their newborn."

The property is a three bedroom one bathroom home.
