QUINCY, IL -- Gardner Museum of Architecture and Design will be closing its doors indefinitely.

The museum, located on the corner of 5th and Maine in Quincy,  has showcased architectural design since opening in 1977.

In a news release, board chaiman Richard Walz said, "We regret that our efforts to sustain the museum have been unsuccessful," and explained, "Our challenge in recent years has been diminishing resources, which will no longer sustain us in our mission."

The board has decided that the Historical Society of Quincy and Adams County will take over the museum's assets. The HSQAC has created a committee to assess the community's interest in the Gardner Museum and determine the future of the museum's assets.

Now the future of the Gardner Museum will rely on how much the community is willing to support its goal of fostering interest in Quincy's architectural design heritage.
