QUINCY, ILL. -- Before you go to bed Friday night, don't forget you can help stamp out hunger on Saturday.
It's the 20th annual Stamp Out Hunger day where the U.S. Postal Service letter carriers will pick up food left out by the mailbox.
The food that's collected stays local and benefits local food pantries.
More than a billion pounds of food have been collected in the U.S. over the last two decades.
"Basically what we need is people to set out any kind non-perishable canned food items, cereal, pastas, fruit ... canned fruit that is next to the mailbox and when the mail carrier comes by to deliver the mail, they will pick up the food and bring it back to the Post Office," Letter Carrier, George Meyer said.
Local food pantries then come get their share of the food on Monday to take back to help families that need the food.
