HAMILTON, ILL. -- A Keokuk man is in jail after he led sheriff's deputies on a high-speed chase at speeds of up to 100 miles per hour, according to a press release from the Hancock County Sheriff's Office.

Stephen Akers, 33, is charged with aggravated fleeing or attempting to elude officers, reckless driving, improper passing, disobeying a traffic control device, speeding and improper lane usage.

The incident began about 3 p.m. Wednesday when deputies tried to stop a motorcycle on Highway 96 in Hamilton, deputies said.

The driver didn't stop and passed several cars in no passing zones reaching speeds of 100 mph. He drove from Hamilton to Warsaw with police in chase.

The motorcycle struck the front of a westbound truck at the intersection of the new Warsaw Road and Highway 136 in Hamilton, the Sheriff's Office said. He ran from deputies but was eventually arrested.

Akers was taken to Memorial Hospital in Carthage. He was treated and released and remains in the Hancock County Jail.
