QUINCY, ILL. -- A popular nutrition program for senior citizens will undergo even more drastic cuts.

The Meals Plus for Seniors program for the elderly in Adams, Brown, Calhoun, Hancock, Pike and Schuyler counties are in dire financial condition, director Nancy Waters said Monday.

Beginning Aug. 1, four meals sites at Harvest Hill Retirement Center in Quincy and sites in Mt. Sterling, Browning and Barry will close. Two sites in Quincy, one in Hamilton, Versailles, Rushville, Pittsfield, Carthage and Hardin will remain open.

Waters aid that least one administrative position will be eliminated.

The cuts are being attributed to the rising cost of food, gas prices and minimum wage.

“The most distressing cut will be to the Home Delivered Meals Program,” Waters said in the press release statement. “Saturday and Sunday meals will no longer be delivered to older persons – only weekday meals will be available.”

Over 100 people will be left to find another source for weekend meals.

“All of these changes are necessary to keep the basic program intact,” Waters said. “We are hopeful that these cuts will be the last and we can restore services as the economy turns around.”
