FORT MADISON, IOWA -- Residents of Fort Madison attended a tour of the school district's new middle school.

Students have attended classes at Fort Madison Middle School for the last four weeks.

The idea for the new school has been tossed around for years in the district. According to Assistant Principal, Bill Maupin, the previous middle school was built in 1922 and was worn out because of age.

The new school has classrooms that nearly double the size of the old school's.

Superintendent Kenneth Marang says that the school was funded through a penny tax around the entire state of Iowa going until 2029. Marang assured that the addition of sidewalks on the surrounding streets is underway.
