QUINCY, ILL. -- Monday night, the Quincy City Council approved a short-term loan of up to $600,000 from the General Fund to the Quincy Transit Lines.

It will give Quincy Transit Lines the boost it needs from the city to make up for a delay in funding from the state.

The money will be used to pay operating expenses.

Interim Director of Central Services Marty Stegeman said the money will be paid back when the state money arrives.

In other city news, the finance committee voted to bring a Bayview Bridge lighting project before the full council for approval.

The bridge would emit light for holidays and special events.

The project would cost about $685,000.

A federal transportation bill set aside a half a million dollars for the project, while area businesses have contributed $193,000.

"What is really important is that it all be done privately," Fourth Ward Alderman Mike Farha said. "No public money at least for the first 3 to 5 years will be used. Maintenance for the first 3 to 5 years will be done with private dollars, and it'll make a statement, especially  in northeast Missouri, that Quincy is inviting sort of like the arch."

The council is expected to discuss the issue at next week's meeting.
