MISSOURI -- Governor Jay Nixon said that Missouri already has strong laws in place, citing the Missouri Safe Schools Act of 1996.

In a letter he sent to the superintendents of each of Missouri public school district, he stated his opposition to legislation that would arm teachers.

Nixon goes on to say that "this legislation would put our children at risk and limit the ability of local school districts to keep their schools safe."

The governor concluded his letter by thanking the superintendents for their commitment to the students and told them that in the coming weeks he would engage with Missourians to find solutions to keep Missouri schools safe.
