QUINCY, ILL. -- A Quincy University Student is recovering from serious injuries Tuesday after she was struck by a car.

Officers say a 71-year-old driver struck 19-year-old Shannon Peters of Elk Grove, Ill. at 6:30 p.m. Monday.

The accident happened approximately 350 feet east of the intersection of 18th and Chestnut Streets in front of Garner Hall on QU's campus.

Peters was taken to Blessing Hospital for her injuries. She is listed in critical condition.

“Our hearts go out to Shannon and her family at this most difficult time. We will continue to keep them foremost in our prayers,” Robert Gervasi, president of Quincy University, said in a press release issued Tuesday.

According to that same release, special arrangements have been made on campus to comfort Shannon’s friends and classmates. Tiffany Nolan, vice president for student affairs, is encouraging students who need assistance to visit the Counseling Center, located on the ground floor of Friars Hall. The center can be reached by dialing extension 3785.

“It is important that we come together as a college community and offer each other support while we attempt to come to terms with this terrible accident,” Nolan said in the release.

Police are still investigating the crash, though no one has been ticketed as of yet.
