MACOMB, ILL. -- Western Illinois University is expecting an increase in the flu on campus in the coming week.

Mary Margaret Harris with Beu Health Center says the week after students come back from winter break is usually when it hits.

The center has extended the number of flu clinics. The next is scheduled this Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. inside the Student Union concourse.

The health center still has about 425 doses of the flu vaccine to give out.

Harris says the flu is not something to take lightly, especially when so many students are confined to the university's campus.

"Stay home when you're sick. I know there's a big push to go to class, as we are an academic institution, but if people have the flu, they need to stay home 24 hours after their fever breaks," Harris said.

Students and staff should seek medical attention if they develop:

- difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
- pain or pressure in the chest or abdomen
- sudden dizziness
- confusion
- severe or persistent vomiting
- flu-like symptoms that improve but then return with fever and worse cough
