FORT MADISON, IOWA -- Union workers at Pinnacle Foods reached an agreement with the company after more than a month of negotiations.

The United Food and Commercial Workers sent out a press release Friday morning announcing the agreement.

"We are very pleased to announce that the membership of UFCW Local 617 of Pinnacle foods has voted to accept the new contract Proposal presented by Pinnacle foods," the release says. "Thank you very much for your attention to this matter."

Bargaining began in September. The company had reached a tentative agreement with the union Jan. 18. The company originally proposed eliminating pensions. The company and the union came to an agreement in January on a deal that saw pensions reinstated but with higher health care premiums.

The 431 union members continued to work during the negotiations under the terms of their expired contract.

The company produces canned foods including chili, Vienna sausages and Armour brands.
