QUINCY, ILL. -- A Rhode Island philanthropist is about to hand over a large sum of money to the Quincy area Salvation Army.

For the sixteenth year now, Alan Shawn Feinstein is offering $1 million to non-profit, anti-hunger agencies throughout the country.

Quincy's Salvation Army will get some of that money, representing a portion of the money raised by the community. That's where you're needed. You're asked to give to the Salvation Army's food pantry in Quincy between now and April 30. It could help feed thousands of people in the Quincy area in a time of need.

"People are not used to giving to the Salvation Army this time of the year. So it really helps us with the shelter of the foods and with our food pantry," Major Andrew Miller, a senior officer at the Kroc Center said.

Last year, the Salvation Army provided 13,767 meals to shelter residents; 3,593 food baskets through the pantries,1,050 Christmas food baskets for families and 740 meals on Thanksgiving and Christmas Days.

Donations of money and food can be made to the Salvation Army Family Services office at 333 N. 6th St. or mailed to the Salvation Army, PO Box 75, Quincy, Ill. 62306.
