CARTHAGE, ILL. -- The Carthage Police Department is asking for your help as it investigates a case of vandalism that hit several buildings and businesses around the town square.

The incidents were discovered Tuesday night at about 10 p.m.

Vandals broke out several windows at the Carthage Public Library and other buildings.

The also splashed white paint on the west entry doors to the Hancock County Courthouse.

Susan Hunt is the library director and she said she got a call Tuesday night about the vandalism.

"I hope they didn't choose us for some reason. I hope it was an act of vandalism and we were in the way," Hunt said.

A total of five windows were broken at the library. Glass was strewn across the front inside portion of the library. It took staff and some volunteers a few hours to clean up the glass before they could open for business on Wednesday.

Gary Waddell is the Carthage police chief and he said his department is following up on some leads that have come in to the department.

"Yeah, I stopped in one of our local businesses this morning and was approached by one of our citizens and he's very angry, specifically because of the nature of the buildings, being public buildings, the courthouse somewhat of a landmark for us. And with the damage that was done, it's made the community pretty upset," Waddell said.

The director said the library has a $2,500 deductible for the insurance and that money will have to come out of its regular budget to pay for the repairs.

If suspects are caught, Chief Waddell said they could face felony charges.

If you have any information that could help police solve this case, you're asked to call either the Carthage Police Department at 217-357-2245 or the Hancock County Sheriff's Department at 217-357-2115.
