SEDALIA, MO. (AP) -- Officials are trying to decide whether to file charges against a Missouri man who fatally shot his wife while trying to install a satellite TV system in their home.

Thirty-four-year-old Patsy Long of Deep Water was pronounced dead Saturday evening after being shot in the chest with a .22-caliber handgun. Her husband, Ronald Long, fired the shot from the inside of their home after several unsuccessful efforts to punch a hole through the exterior wall using other means.

Henry County Sheriff's Deputies say the woman was hit by the second of two shots fired by her husband.

Investigators say a person involved in such a case normally would be charged with manslaughter, but that was up to the prosecutor.

First off none of you know what your talking about and since i was there i do believe i know more than you. Im patsys' daughter and that would be my father.....cant any of you read? He did try drilling a hole in the wall and the reason he was doing it himself was because we had just added on a room to the house. There for the conpany could not instale it since we had not just subscribed to the company we have had the service for years. And for those of you who are woundering he never got charged with anything. Dont any of you even think about what the kids are going threw. How do you think they would have taken it, just losing there mom and then there dad when he was not guilty.

O and lets not forget how stupid it is that all of you waste your time on here talking about something you dont know anything about since you where not there.

Why are so many of you criticizing each other? I thought these comments were supposed to be about the story, not abusing the intellect of one another. That being said, I don't think the wife was the idiot for getting shot. The husband should at least be charged with unlawfully discharging his firearm. Then he should be sent to the looney bin for trying. But you can't blame him for not being Superman. After all, not everyone has x-ray vision. :)

Accidents happen but being stupid is another?! Why would you use a gun to put a hole in a wall on purpose?? come on, but as for using this for thier own personal agenda come on IRAQ that is a personal agenda, this incident was not about that and had nothing to do with that besides if they didn't want comments they you wouldn't be allowed to put them down. Apparently you are missing your own point. You spent the time to read all of the discussion about the idiot who shot his wife, so why don't you cut back on the moaning about people venting on the stupidity of apparently the average American. If you want to concentrate on more important issues that's your prerogative, but don't impune strangers for exercising their own freedom to engage in a public forum and discuss things for which you don't feel are worth the time.

But.... my question is if he is not charged will he beable to hold a firearm in his possestion legally? Even for hunting will he not know what 2 shoot or mistake a human 4 a animal? As a mother my son in 2006 got shot in the head by another child and passed away and nothing was done about it. But this was a adult!!! "My Error." is not a complete sentence. If we are going to correct people for capitalization and spelling, then it just makes good "3rd grade" sense to correct them for proper composition grammar, too.

I will, though, agree with you that beer is surely to blame for this shooting.

My error. I was under the impression he used the gun as a hammer instead of "punching a hole in the wall for a cable." That makes this story even better. Is anyone wondering why the wife thought it was a wonderful idea to stand anywhere near the area as it fired?? And in agreement with many before, why not rent a drill or buy the cable when they throw in the installation for free as a special?!?! The longer I sit & think about it, the more I am wondering if whether this is an accidental death insurance claim scheme for their children (how nice) or if they were on the rocks. I have had people I seriously would have liked to throw to the sows, but come on. And I'm not trying to "make it up and fit the story to my own crazy mind"-- I'm trying to be a realist. The prosecutor has a lot on his side so far...

Beer, anyone??

First off, for those of you that didn't make it past 3rd grade for spelling... buzz off. It's NOT that hard to use caps and read what you write before you post. It's not a race against time here people. I can find spelling errors in almost all of the posts. But a combination of missing words & not using caps...Not naming names here or anything, but Don Smith was quite a gem. I couldn't stand to read further after that.

I would love to agree with Mr. Aquaintance. However, I think Mr. Aquaintance is stuck on the wedding photos and first few weeks we all have in our relationships. Who DOESN'T want to kill their spouse/parents/etc. after a while?! I must hand it to the guy... it could almost be an accident. And I don't blame him in the least. If she was that looney to go back OUT where he was firing a gun... well, enough said there. Personally, I'd be calling the psych ward if my boyfriend/husband/friend grabbed a gun to use as a hammer. And checking for bullets in the chamber may have been something I think my 5 year old nephew would know to do?

Blaming schools & other people doesn't even come CLOSE to this scenario. Both of them obviously needed help. And that's not funny. That's not mean. That's the truth, and it's sad. I feel for the both of them.

I am appalled at this story. I heard on the evening news the police in Sadelia said they were not going to charge this man. Now come on, we all know deep down this was NO accident. Why would he ask the wife to go outside to see if the second shot goes through alright? No one will ever convince me that this was an accident. NO ONE!! I don’t care how well “An Acquaintance, Missouri” says he knows the family. Were you there during every argument the couple had? You never know a person until you live with them and then you don’t really know them. Mrs. Long is a great example of that. Did she ever think her husband would ever in a million years shoot he, of course not.” I cannot believe she went along with what the husband asked her to do. If I knew my husband was going to use a gun instead of a drill to punch a hole in the wall I would be miles away. She must have really trusted him or he was a wife abuser and she did everything he asked her to do. Whether you believe it or not, there are a lot of women out there like that. He didn’t do a very good job of making it look like an accident when he had to shoot twice to kill her. Come on, who in their right mind believes that? There is not a married couple in the world that has not had arguments and this argument went too far. If nothing else he should be locked up for life for stupidity. How dare he think the intelligent people of this country believe him? I feel so sorry for the children. I hope they weren’t home at the time. How do you tell your kids, “Hey, I just shot your mother.” I would say arrest him, lock him up and when he goes to trial get an intelligent jury and they will put him away for life. Oh, and move the trial out of Sadelia. I can see there are too many people there who believe this ridiculous story. May God bless his children.

First of all, I've never heard of a dish/cable company who doesn't install for you.
Second of all, this story just proves the fact further that guns kept in homes more often hurt and kill their own family rather than people intruding.
Third, what he gets is what he deserves. He took another life, regardless of motive or lack thereof. Jail time would be sufficient. Life sentencing isn't necessary, but a couple months to a year or so couldn't hurt anyone. The jury might have sympathy, but the facts are the facts. Reckless endangerment, manslaughter/murder, whichever they are trying him for.

People kill other people all the time on accident. I understand they were happily married? but this case is no difference. Everyone experiences grief when they accidentally kill someone.

I'm flabbergasted at this guy's stupidity. What was he thinking? A good hammer drill combined with the proper drill bit will go through almost anything. He would only need to make a hole that is big enough to fit a cable wire through.

Consider this.....

Posted by tina taylor, chicago - Wednesday, April 02, 2008 at 12:35 p.m.

Has anyone considered that there is the possibility that the wife was unaware of the husband using the gun for this purpose? He could have asked her to watch for the "drill" to come through the wall. We will never be able to find out her side of what happened. Sounds convenient that he got her in the chest. This could be a set up for murder.

After sitting and reading all these colorful comments, I have several things I would like to add. Can each and every one of you tell me honestly that you have never done anything you regret? Do you know anyone that has? I personally have.
I happen to know this couple. Let me set a few things straight for all of you who like to assume the truth.
First and most importantly, this man loved his wife very deeply. Body and soul, with every breath he took. The pain he is going through right now is something most of us would never make it through.
Secondly, contrary to popular assumption, they DID NOT live in a trailer home. They have a rather nice home right on the lake.
Additionally, they DO have children, they are not first time gun owners, the shot was fired from the inside of the home out, and they are very loving and giving people- someone that would give you the last cent they had if you were in need.
From all the obvious misspelling and slanderous statements here, none of you (with the exception of 1 or 2) understand this was a horrible TRAGIC ACCIDENT. Mr. Long will pay his penance by waking every morning without his darling wife by his side, and knowing he is the reason she is not there.
Before you post another hateful word about this family, remember the Lord said: "Judge not lest ye be judged."

"This guy is definitely an idiot, but let's not forget the 80,000,000 gun owners who didn't kill anyone today.

Unfortunately the same can't be said for automobiles, which are thousands of times more dangerous but for some reason aren't targeted by liberals...

— Drew Dusty, Los Angeles, CA"

What kind of logic are you using for your argument? One, what does being liberal or not have anything to do with guns? There are those who are liberal and those who are conservative who support gun ownership. You should say extremists.

Also, what is the ultimate purpose for a gun and a car? A gun has no other purpose than to inflict pain, possibly death (let's forget about target practice). It shoots a projectile and hits an object. That's all it does. It "protects" by enabling someone to cause harm. A car's primary purpose is to help people to get from point A to point B. A counter argument to your point would be how many people use a car to PURPOSELY inflict bodily harm vs those who PURPOSELY use a gun to inflict bodily harm. Now the numbers are different, aren't they? I'm not saying automobiles are safer overall, but I can't grasp your logic.

just as I was about to bash this goofball for doing this, especially since the first time didn't work and he should have made sure he knew where he was directing that bullet, I thought about how just recently I was putting some industrial shelving together with a large Hitachi nail gun. A lady friend helping me was on the other side, no face protection, and she says, "oh gimme that thing" so she could tack up the 2x4 on her side. It was a little more gun than she thought, she shot, it bounced and fired a second nail that went right by my face. I warned her about the way she used it and then lo and behold if I didn't do the same thing 2 weeks later when she was helping me again. I've used a gun like this for many years but the first time to be in this position where she was holding a brace on the other side. I fired the first nail, no problem, was in kind of a bind where I couldn't get a straight shot on the second one but shot anyway and the gun recoiled and fired a second nail that grazed the side of her face. OOOOOOO Myyyyyy Gooooooodness, talk about a cold chill, I sure hope I learned my lesson.

Posted by Drew Dusty, Los Angeles, CA - Thursday, March 27, 2008 at 10:57 p.m.

This guy is definitely an idiot, but let's not forget the 80,000,000 gun owners who didn't kill anyone today.

Unfortunately the same can't be said for automobiles, which are thousands of times more dangerous but for some reason aren't targeted by liberals...

SHOCKED !!!!!

Posted by PATTI MCCANN-BOWSER, WORK - Thursday, March 27, 2008 at 6:35 p.m.

I do not think he should be charged. I'm sure he feels horrified by the whole ordeal. Imprisonment would most likely be more harm than good. He will need counseling & consoling, not staring @ walls & thinking of her tragedy. He needs support not punishment ! However, it was stupid to fire a gun threw a house when drills are made to do the job. I bet he thinks twice before using a gun again.

I'm nominating him!

I'm nominating him as an honorary Floridiot! This is something I'd expect to see here in Broward or Miami-Dade Counties.

p.s. - loved the comment about the right calibar for 75 ohm cable.

g.p., Fort Lauderdale.

I firmly believe that a .32 cal would make the hole in the wall exactly to fit snuggly for the coaxle cable...I can't believe he didn't know that?...poor guy...he should have gone to the library and researcehd this one a bit more....why was his wife in the way??

My Thoughts

Posted by Tiff Y, Temple, Pa USA - Thursday, March 27, 2008 at 4:08 p.m.

Come on now......What idiot would shoot through their wall knowing that their wife was on the other side? My thoughts are this.......he didn't like his wife so, he shot her in the house, then shot the wall & then carried her outside to make it look like an accident. I'm sorry either way he should serve time for shooting her even if it was truly an accident. The story just has too many holes in it.

Stupid is Stupid does....

Posted by Mark D, Mass - Thursday, March 27, 2008 at 11:24 a.m.

Unbelievable,
It's amazing what people will do.
I wonder if some politician is going to use this story to try and come up with some new "gun control" law.
This goes to show and really emphasizes on useless, lame, unenforceable gun laws to say the least, guns don't kill, people kill.
I really hate to say it, but the wife was just as to blame as the husband for staying in the house.
I mean come on, even someone who know very little about firearms has to know that discharging any kind of a firearm inside a house will mean someone is going to get hurt or in this case "dead".

Man Shoots Wife While Installing Satellite TV System

Whoever reported and wrote this story did a real 1/2 "SSSed" job. The million dollar question from this simple Indian is did this man succeed in punching the hole and complete the installation or was he arrested before he could complete the installation. I am dying of curiosity.

Bring the gun up on charges, not the man behind it.If you dont beleive me, just read the papers. Man killed by gun, Woman killed by gun, Intruder killed by gun.
This jerk will get much more then a prision sentance, he will always have the thought of killing his wife in the back of his mind

Unbelievable

definetly has to spend jail time, and he also indagered his house and could have hit an electrical box and caused a short circuit or explosion. this is why guns should banned from private citizens. study
shows guns are hardley ever used on intruder, but fire
accidently,or in suicide, or against a spouse. banned guns.

That's sad that a person died, but maybe it's for the best. He won't piss in the gene pool anymore; at least until he gets another bullet catcher. Another issue is the 2nd Amendment. Freedoms aren't free. And the price of the second amendment is that you have to sell guns to morons and mental patients because refusing them would be 'discrimination'. Some people should not be allowed to have anything dangerous. These are the people who could screw up a steel ball with a rubber mallet.

I cannot not even imagine what he must be going through right now. Sometimes individuals do things thinking it's logical when it turns out horrifying. I'm sure this happended with the right intentions and that was to get your holes in the walls although; I'm almost positive that the end results were never expected. Wow!! My heart goes out to you, your family & her family. I hope once the investigations complete & they find out that it was not intentional you will not have to face any charges. Dear, you have to live with this the rest of your life & if you have children you have to tell them what happened to "mommy". That's painful enough...

I am a chimney sweep. My company an I were removing an old clay tile liner from the chimney and we had a piece of clay tile stuck. Long story short we could not get the piece unstuck. While we were brainstorming the home owner came too us with a grand idea. He offered us a .22 caliber rifle an a box of bullets and said "why dont you shoot that out of there". Needless to say this storie no matter how tragic does not suprise me.

The wrong person was killed. He should have given her the gun and told her where to shoot, then he'd have been taken out of the gene pool and procreation would't be possible. He may produce others just like him.

There are people who die in tragic home accidents every year, and no matter the circumstances, these are situations of immense grief, sorrow, shame, and loss. No one in a situation of terrible loss deserves to have scorn and laughter directed at them. Please say a prayer for this woman's family, for all who loved her, and for her husband, who will bear this agony for the rest of his life. We have all used poor judgment at times.... no one deserves to be hurt this deeply. Please be compassionate.

There are drills for holes in walls. They are as long as you need them. Shooting a hole is thoughtful and creative, but strangely, in this case, dumb.

If the man loved his wife, well, she is lost to this world and him. He has lost his best friend.

He obviously did not know anything about installing satellite dishes. The right way is to attach a string and then the cable wire to the back of the bullet. Then you call the wife over to catch the string as it comes barreling through the wall. This man would have been too dangerous with an Electric Drill. He then would have drilled her like a jerk and there ain't no comin' back from that! Either!
I work fer a cable company, an' it took me six wives ta find thet out!

My heart goes out to her family and her husband. What a tragedy. Anyone who knows anything about firearms is understanding that they are very dangerous. All NEW gun owners should be given a lesson on gun safety. I do not want to use the word stupid...but it seems like a common reaction to this story. Rather i would use uneducated and again plead that people take gun safety very seriously. The Right to bear arms. indeed a right!

What the Heck Were You Thinking Ronald Long ?

Posted by Ann Marsh, Missouri - Wednesday, March 26, 2008 at 11:04 a.m.

Hard to believe a grown man would actually use a gun to make a hole in for cable. I can see then charging him with stupidity but not any form murder charges. This was clearly an AVOIDABLE, tragic accident. He didn't act very bright and she, unfortunately, was at the wrong place, at the wrong time. Him living with the fact that he killed his wife will be punishment enough for him I'm sure. I hope they didn't have any children. When are people gonna learn that guns have to be handled with care. This was such a waste. My prayers go out to the family.
