Two Quincy churches came together to rock out on Sunday night!

Melrose Chapel United Methodist Church and Union United Methodist Church cobined forces to create a unique worship service.  The service, called a U2Charist (U-2-kah-rist), featured a cover band made up of local musicians.

The theme of the night was "What if..." to challenge worshippers to take the gospel seriously.  Pastors of both churches, Rev. Bob Morwell and Rev. Wally Carlson designed the whole service and Carlson even plays guitar in the band.

Rev. Carlson said the unconventional worship service has a big impact on people.  He also said, "This stuff moves people.  People were standing up and dancing and clapping and singing along.  It was a rock concert.  But it was a rock concert that had really really significant undertones and foundations and overtones."

Worshippers also donated money to "Nothing but Nets" which provides mosquito netting to the poor in Africa, to protect against the widespread Malaria there.  You can donate by logging onto: www.nothingbutnets.net

U2 is our Beatles

Growing up in the 1980's, I always saw U2 as emerging as one of the greatest bands of all time. This is one of the reasons why. They cross the rock spectrum into gospel. U2 is the only band I ever saw live where people were crying. Kind of corny, yes, but the power of the music and lyrics is undeniable.

I'm so glad to hear of the ways in which pastors in your area are using the U2charist to raise awareness of global extreme poverty and just how little it would take from the wealthiest of nations to end that extreme poverty in our lifetime. I admit as the originator of the U2charist from its very first service in April of 2004 that I never imagined that it would grow so quickly to reach so many communities in such distant places -- but I take that as evidence that the Spirit really is behind our uniting to end estreme poverty.

Thank you for your coverage of this movement.
