JEFFERSON CITY, MO. (AP) -- It's cool yet crunchy. It debuted in Missouri more than a century ago. And now the ice cream cone has been approved as the official state dessert.
House members voted 112-31 Wednesday night to add the dessert to a list of about two dozen state symbols. The Senate approved the bill 24-10 in February. So now it goes to Gov. Matt Blunt.
Home-schooled children from St. Louis County had lobbied for the ice cream cone. They note that the edible ice cream cone made its American debut at the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis.
The students' sales pitch included an ice cream social at the Capitol earlier this year. They also said that officially recognizing the ice cream cone could provide an economic boost to the state's dairy industry.
