You've probably heard flood victims aren't getting a great deal of help with the clean up efforts.
That was the same situation for Monkey Run.
Now, that's changed, and many people credit one woman.
Crews are busy cleaning up the mess the mighty mississippi left behind in Monkey Run. For a few weeks, families here were having to clean up their own messes.
"County officials said they didn't have money in their budget to help us. Hannibal said we're in the wrong county to help us," says resident Marilyn McGee.
So McGee called the United Way's new 2-1-1 number for help. Ten minutes later she was on the phone with a representative from Americorps.
"It's been great. We've gotten to a place where we can start rebuilding the inside of our house again, and not worry about the messy stuff becasue they are taking care of our messy stuff," adds McGee.
Last Thursday, Americorps members arrived, and have been working hard ever since.
"What we're doing is pretty much mucking. Right now we're working in the basement and getting our all of the junk and insulation out," says Joshua Davis, an Americorps member.
Help also came from Tennessee, in the form of the St. Mark's United Methodist Church Disaster Response Team.
"We're helping tear out the inside of the houses. We have about seven houses that need it. Hopefully somebody will come back behind us and help put it back together," says volunteer Paul Givens.
And if they don't maybe Marilyn McGee will get back on the phone to get more help to Monkey Run. She tells me her neighbors now jokingly refer to her as the Mayor of Monkey Run.
The United Methodist Church Disaster Response Team is made up of several churches from Tennessee.
They usually help with disasters like tornadoes and hurricanes.
Floods are a rarity.
The organization doesn't ask for money for its help, but relies strictly on donations.
If you'd like to donate, you can send it to St. Mark's United Methodist Church Disaster Response Team, 1267 N. Rutherford Blvd, Murfreesboro, TN 37130
