Sny Island Levee and Drainage District proposing increase in annual maintenance costs.

NEW CANTON, IL -- Because of recent flooding and the ever-rising price of gasoline, the Sny Island Levee and Drainage District is proposing an increase in annual maintenance costs.

Right now the maximum rate landowners would ever have to pay is $8.25 per acre of land.

Commissioners for the district have asked the Pike County Court to raise the maximum maintenance charge $10 to $18.25 per acre.

Landowners would not necessarily have to pay this, it is just the maximum they would ever have to pay.

This increased rate would generate a little more than $2 million for district operations.

This money would mainly go to diesel fuel in order to run equipment, like water pumps which have been running around the clock due to high water levels.

But it would also go towards any repairs, parts and service needed on machinery.

In order for this new rate to go into affect for 2009, it would have to be passed by the last business day in November which would be November 28, 2008.

A hearing will be held on this matter at 1:00p.m Thursday, September 25, 2008 in the Pike County Courthouse.
