ADAMS COUNTY, ILLINOIS -- There's a confirmed case of the mumps in Adams County.

According to a news release from the Adams County Health Department, health care workers are taking necessary action to limit the disease as much as possible.

Health department staff have contacted those who might have been exposed.

The department says there's no cause for concern for the general population.

Mumps is a viral disease characterized by fever, swelling and tenderness of one or more salivary glands in the neck.

Residents are asked to check to make sure their immunizations are up-to-date.

A second mumps vaccine is encouraged for residents born after 1957, especially for health care workers, women of childbearing years or those who've traveled out of the country or plan to do so.
