SIOUX CITY, IOWA (AP) -- Sioux City police say a man shot himself during a standoff with police after he shot and wounded his estranged wife during a car chase.

The incident happened late Wednesday when police received a 911 call from Melissa Powell, who was on her cell phone. According to police, she was shot by her estranged husband, Dan Powell, who was still chasing her in the downtown area.

Police say Powell rammed his wife's car, and as officers arrived, he got out of his car and fired several shots at his wife's car.

Dan Powell fled in his car across a parking lot where he stopped. Officers had a short standoff with Powell before his shot himself.

Mercy Medical Center spokeswoman Dianne Krier says Thursday that Dan Powell died. His wife was in fair condition.
