PERRY, ILL. -- A Pike County father is dead Monday after trying to rescue his son from an ice-covered pond.

Pike County sheriff's deputies say around 5 p.m. they got a call of two people submerged in a frozen pond near Perry, Illinois.

After arriving, crews tried to rescue 44-year-old Roderick Webel of rural Perry.

He went under water after rescuing his son from the ice-covered pond along with a hired hand who was also trying to rescue Webel's son.

Webel was pulled from the water at about 5:35 p.m. He was later pronounced dead at Illini Community Hospital in Pittsfield.
