MOUNT PLEASANT, Iowa (AP) - A Mount Pleasant police officer has shot and killed a man during a struggle at the local hospital.
The officer had accompanied the man to the hospital early Monday morning after it was determined he needed to undergo an evaluation because he was having homicidal thoughts.
Officials say that after an initial evaluation, the man, identified as 38-year-old Michael Harris, tried to leave.
When the officer, Richard Martin, told Harris he needed to return to the examination room,
Harris became combative and Martin tried unsuccessfully to subdue him with a Taser.
Authorities say that during the fight, Harris began choking Martin, who shot him once in the chest, killing him.
The incident remains under investigation.
