KAHOKA, MO. -- The future of US Highway 136 in Northeast Missouri was discussed at a public meeting Tuesday, June 9th.  Representatives from the Missouri Department of Transportation were at the meeting to listen to concerns from the public about Highway 136.

KHQA spoke with the President of Highway 136 Corridor East Steve Murphy.

He said this meeting was used to come up with ideas  to make 136 better, both from a construction standpoint and an economic development aspect.

Murphy told KHQA good transportation is important to getting economic development.

And one of the biggest issues facing good transportation on US 136 is the lack of shoulders.

"There are some areas where improvements have been made," said Murphy, "but we need improvements badly because you can't pull on shoulders if you have problems, law enforcement officers can't pull people over that are violating the laws because there's no place to go. And there's no area of escape if there's problems in front of you."

Highway 136 Corridor east stretches about 150 miles from Clark County to Mercer County.

Another meeting will be held Tuesday, June 16th for the West Corridor in Unionville.

Any concerns or ideas brought up at these meetings will be taken to the Department of Transportation and the Missouri Transportation Committee.
