WASHINGTON (AP) -- Reports of heart valve damage are causing a drug used by thousands of patients with Parkinson's disease to be pulled from the market.
The Food and Drug Administration says pergolide, which is sold under the name Permax and also in generic versions, is being withdrawn at the agency's request.
An FDA official says other drugs can be substituted. He estimates that between 12,025 people currently use the drug.
At least 14 patients have needed to have heart valves replaced, but the official says be believes that number to be higher.
Patients are being told not to stop using the drug abruptly, and to consult with their doctor about either a switch to another drug or about a gradual reduction in the amount of pergolide.
