Mendon, Ill.-- One Tri-State Community celebrated it's history, looking forward to its future.Mendon celebrates its175th anniversary this weekend. The community was founded by Colonel John B. Chittenden in 1834. To celebrate, the town enjoyed good food, mud volleyball, and some entertainment from area fire departments.
Lima-Tioga and Mendon fire fighters competed in a barrel fight, which proved quite cool considering the heat. We talked to Mayor Dean Woodruff. He says his community has seen a lot of change over the years, but one thing that stays the same is togetherness.
"Mendon's a close knit community like most small towns. We're very close and we help each other. Like the other night when the storm hit. A tree across the street blew over at the church. And the whole community came out and helped clean it up," said Mayor Woodruff.
Mayor Woodruff says Mendon has a lot of opportunity for growth. With the town located near a four lane highway and plenty of infrastructure and a economic development committee. He expects a lot of changes in the next few years when the economy gets better
Events continue Sunday, starting with community church service at 10 a.m.
