QUINCY, IL -- KHQA received an e-mail Thursday afternoon from a viewer telling us that Quincy Compressor laid off 15 hourly employees on a permanent basis, and that the lay-offs are in addition to 17 workers already on temporary layoffs.
KHQA followed up on the e-mail for the facts.
Here's a statement e-mailed to KHQA in response to our questions:
On behalf of the company, we appreciate your interest in providing a balanced, factual perspective on the actions we have taken today.
Seeking to balance the needs of our customers, employees, and shareholders, we believed that the opportunity in May to offer an extended voluntary layoff to our workforce was the economically responsible and socially prudent course of action. The duration of the voluntary layoff was for a period of 60 business days. We are now at the conclusion of that 60 day period and business conditions have remained highly volatile and largely unchanged. Therefore, while there have been isolated extenuating circumstances, the basic number of volunteers who accepted the layoff is equivalent to the number of positions now moved to a long term layoff status.
We believe we are now properly sized for the current environment. While we have experienced reductions in Alabama, California, and China, we remain hopeful that the general economic climate will improve and that we will be able to recall our workforce in response to growing demand. We have sought to treat everyone fairly and to link them to local resources that can be of assistance on an ongoing basis.
I hope the information addresses your needs. Please let me know if I can be of further assistance.
Thank you.
