Hannibal- Hannibal police say the city's two red light cameras intersections are making the streets safer for everyone....and they've got the numbers to prove it.

You'll recall red light cameras were installed in Hannibal at Highway 61 and West Ely and 61 and Highway 168...back in the Fall of 2007.

According to crash information from the Missouri Division of Highway Safety the number of accidents caused by running red lights at those intersections monitored by red light cameras have gone down 80 percent from 2007 to 2008.

All other accidents in those intersections (not necessarily caused by running of red light) have gone down more than 50 percent.

Also police say the total number of folks running red lights has decreased from 2007, before the red light cameras were installed.

The average red light runs dropped 36 percent....from 1,135 a month in 2007 to roughly 760 in 2008.
