Since 1892, the Sierra Club has been working to protect communities, wild places, and the planet itself. It is the oldest, largest, and most influential grassroots environmental organization in the United States.

It was founded on May 28, 1892 in San Francisco, California by the well-known conservationist and preservationist John Muir, who became its first president. The Sierra Club has hundreds of thousands of members in chapters located throughout the US, and is affiliated with Sierra Club Canada. John Muir, appears on the back of the California quarter.

Its website has articles, blogs and video relating to the Gulf Oil Spill, including a special presentation called Beyond Oil. It also has a special section devoted to the oil spill, including links to other media.
