The Illinois smoking ban will go into effect at midnight on January first.
The law bans smoking in public places like bars and restaurants.
But many people don't realize that the law also applies to private social clubs.
And that could mean a major shock for some people celebrating on New Years Eve. Quincy police chief Rob Copley says that he hopes clubs and other locations will plan ahead and make sure their patrons are not smoking on New Years eve so that they won't have to go around and tell patrons to put their cigarettes out at midnight. Chief Copley says he doesn't want his department to become the "smoking police" but starting on January first they will enforce the law.
