QUINCY, ILL. (AP) -- Now that the Mississippi River has crested in many Illinois communities, the brunt of the damage is done. The work, however, is ongoing.
Almost 1,000 Army National Guard soldiers, inmates and volunteers are continuing to sandbag, and they're also putting down plastic and straw along the Sny levee near Quincy.
Patti Thompson of the Illinois Emergency Management Agency says a breach could threaten Interstate 72 and small towns like Hull.
Flooding has already damaged crops. Blake Roderick is executive director of the Pike and Scott County farm bureaus, and he says up to 25 percent of the corn crop in Pike County may be lost.
Counties lower on the Mississippi are reporting mild damage to buildings and crops.
