ALTON, ILL. (AP) -- Alton is turning into a roach motel for pigeons: They check in but they don't check out.

For about a week, dozens of pigeons have been dying in the downtown area in this southwest Illinois city, and one local official believes they're being poisoned.

Doug Smith is president of Downtown Alton Incorporated, and he says he's seen obviously sick pigeons flopping on the sidewalk thrashing around his herb garden.

Smith says the pigeons don't even bother to take off when someone whisks a broom near them.

Mayor Don Sandidge says he doesn't know if anyone is poisoning the birds. But he says, if they are, it isn't something the city has authorized.
