DIAMOND BAR, CA (AP) -- Firefighters have been making progress overnight, though a trio of major wildfires continue to burn around Southern California.
Ferocious Santa Ana winds fanned flames that destroyed more than 800 homes, mobile homes and apartments since Thursday night. In all, 55 square miles of land has been scorched.
Most of the damage has been in Orange and Riverside Counties.
Another fire north of LA is still burning, but has moved into an area well outside the city.
A fire that started Thursday in Santa Barbara is now 80 percent contained.
Still, the smell of smoke pervades around the region, masking the gains firefighters are making. Dozens of schools have had to cancel classes today.
