CLARKSVILLE, MO. (AP) -- Machinery failure has forced the closure of a lock on the Mississippi River at Clarksville and service may not return until Thursday.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said Tuesday traffic has been halted on the river in both directions.

The corps said Lock 24 was closed early Tuesday when machinery closing one of the gates failed.

The gates open and close to permit vessels to enter and be lifted or lowered in the lock chamber.

A northbound tow boat from Bettendorf, Iowa, and six barges were in the chamber at the time and remain locked inside.
