Adams County officials are announcing that the automated Flu Information Hotline that is already in existence will now be manned by Registered Nurses to provide flu screening advice 24- hours a day, 7 days a week. The number to call is 217-277-5900.
Flu symptoms are increasing among the population and medical facilities have seen a sharp increase of patients exhibiting similar symptoms. The purpose of the flu screening line is to evaluate a patient over the phone and give them advice and a recommendation if they need to contact their physician or seek medical attention. Many people in the community that are experiencing these symptoms may not need to see a doctor, but rather stay home and isolate themselves from others to prevent from spreading the disease. This hotline will give people an outlet to seek advice and determine if it is appropriate for them to seek medical attention.
The number will also allow residents to obtain information about seasonal and H1N1 flu vaccine availability, clinic scheduling, and the eligible populations for the vaccine.
Healthcare providers in Adams County have experienced a large increase in telephone inquiries about vaccine, treatment and other general flu information. This line will give residents a fast and easy option when calling about general flu information. Residents are encouraged to contact the Flu Information Hotline first when seeking general information, and then calling the agency they typically receive healthcare or information from only if their questions were not answered by the Flu Information Hotline.
The hotline is a community-wide effort. All major medical providers in Quincy have participated in the effort including Blessing Hospital, Blessing Physician Services, Quincy Medical Group, Southern Illinois University Quincy Family Practice, and Adams County Health Department. Operators will be Registered Nurses from all of these partners.
In addition, as the number of people seeking medical treatment for flu-like symptoms increase, Blessing Hospital is asking for your help. If seeking care from Blessing Hospital's Emergency Center, please limit the number of family members that accompany the sick person. Also, visitors are encouraged to restrict children under the age of fifteen from accompanying or visiting sick patients in the Hospital.
