(Quincy, Ill.)  In the midst of football season, the Quincy and Hannibal YMCA's will be going head to head in a gridiron grocery challenge.

The challenge will be to collect the most food items to be donated to a local pantry.

Quincy has always held a member food drive, but saw a competition as a way to get more people involved.

Executive Director of the Hannibal YMCA Pete Friesen says Hannibal just held a new member drive and saw an excellent turnout.

He says this challenge will add a little fun to a great cause.

"In this time when a lot of food pantries are struggling for food, why are these events so important?"

"It gets the community involved. That's what the YMCA is all about, involving the community. Our motto is 'Caring for others'. We want to get the community involved, this is an excellent avenue. And being that it's football season, why not?" said Friesen.

All members and anybody from the community can donate food for the challenge.

The drive started Friday, the 23rd, and will be a two week competition.

The winner will also receive 100 items from the other YMCA.

Items collected at Hannibal will go to the Douglas Community Center food pantry and the Salvation Army.

In Quincy the items will go to the Madonna House.
