Quincy, IL -- Halloween may be over, but that didn't stop people from hearing stories from beyond the grave at one of Quincy's most historic cemeteries. For 19 years volunteers from the Gardner Museum have given walk through tours of Woodland Cemetery...founded in 1845.
People were led to several memorable grave monuments where actors gave a brief history about prominent Quincians buried in the Cemetery, such as Sarah Denman, the first manager of Blessing Hospital.
Money raised benefits both the Museum and the Cemetery.
Some people came during day light, but others braved the dark.
Reservations were required for all 10 tours which sold out tonight because the popularity grows every year.
But the tour wasn't made to spook you...but to teach about Quincy's rich history.
"This is not a scary tour this is a historical tour and then we also talk about the cemetery's sybolism and the Victorian Era symbolism on some of the old stones and what that means," said Vicki Ebbing Coordinator Gardner Musuem.
Other individuals featured tonight were John Stillwell, one time president of Electric Wheel; Charles Dazey, playwright famous for 'In Old Kentucky; and Archibald Williams, friend of Abraham Lincoln, District Attorney of Illinois and first U.S. district judge of Kansas.
Other well knows buried in Woodland are John Wood and bodies moved from Quincy's first cemetery, which is now where the Court House is.
In case you're wondering why the tour is the day after Halloween...This is All Saint's Day in various religions.
