(AP) -- A free online health initiative lets you take a virtual walk across Illinois by being physically active.
You could physically walk the length of the state, 595 miles from Metropolis to Winthrop Harbor.
But the online site includes that route among its virtual walks that might be more feasible.
Getting any kind of real exercise earns users miles that count toward distance on the online routes. Users can track their progress, while learning interesting facts about places on those walks.
The site is www.WalkAcrossIllinois.org.
It aims to help fight the nation's obesity epidemic.
More than 12,000 walkers have logged more than 1 million miles so far.
