QUINCY, ILL. -- A local hero was recognized for his service in Quincy Friday afternoon.

Colonel Scott Thoele spoke to the Quincy Exchange Club. Thoele commanded 3,000 soldiers with the 33rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team. They were deployed to Kabul, Afghanistan for more than a year.

He and his unit returned to the U-S six weeks ago. Thoele spoke to the exchange club about life overseas and missions accomplished. He also spoke about Veterans Day, which he says has new meaning to him.

"You get a better appreciation for the sacrifice that everyone does, that the soldiers do, and it's a very special feeling," said Thoele.

Colonel Thoele says he's glad to be home, especially during football season. He's a huge Green Bay Packers fan.
