Quincy, IL -- The Quincy City Council must approve a permit to allow Ameren C-I-P-S to spend $20 million to remove contaminated soil from downtown Quincy.

The old manufactured gas plant stretches from 8th to 9th along the south side of Jersey.

The EPA ordered the clean-up.

Work will begin in January and should take about two years to complete.

All the soil to a depth of 25 feet deep will be excavated.

New fill will be installed to return the site to a grassy field.

In other action, council members agreed to change zoning on Maine street to allow the Little Jess car dealership to expand.

Aldermen also agreed to spend $40 thousand to buy new snow removal equipment for Baldwin Field.
